Lixouri Kefalonia

So you decided to go to Lixouri for your holiday, well let me tell you…it’s beautiful. Having lived on this side of Kefalonia, there is certainly a difference in the pace of life I think. Just a little more laid back and not as commercialised.

Lixouri is a charming town located on the western coast of the Greek island of Kefalonia which is part of the Ionian Islands group. A ferry runs every half an hour, which takes 20 minutes to get across to Argostoli. The price is €3 per person, but if you are staying in Lixouri, I would advise you purchase a book of 10 tickets for a little saving.

Location: Lixouri is situated on the Paliki Peninsula, directly across the Argostoli Bay from the island’s capital city, Argostoli. It is the second-largest town on Kefalonia, after Argostoli. While Argostoli currently serves as the capital of Kefalonia, Lixouri has, at times, expressed aspirations to become the island’s capital. This desire is rooted in historical, geographical, and cultural factors.

Historical Significance: Lixouri has a rich history dating back to ancient times, with archaeological evidence indicating human settlement in the area since the Mycenaean period. The town has been influenced by various civilisations over the centuries, including the Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans.

Architecture: Lixouri features a mix of traditional and neoclassical architecture, with narrow cobblestone streets, colourful buildings, and charming squares. The town’s picturesque waterfront promenade, lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, is a popular spot for leisurely strolls and enjoying views of the sea. The huge ficus tree (Ficus Australis) in the centre of Lixouri square seems to be a place where families catch up and watch their children play, it’s very impressive.

Culture and Festivals: Lixouri is known for its vibrant cultural scene and traditional festivals. The town hosts various events throughout the year, including religious celebrations, music concerts, and cultural festivals that showcase local music, dance, and cuisine.

Beaches: Lixouri is surrounded by beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters and golden sands. Fikia Beach is the closest to the main square with views across the bay to Argostoli. Here there is a beach bar selling snacks and cold drinks. Some of the nearby beaches include Lepeda Beach, Xi Beach, and Mega Lakos Beach, which are popular destinations for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports.

The clay found at Megas Lakos Beach is believed to have therapeutic properties and is said to be beneficial for the skin. Many people claim that the minerals present in the clay help to exfoliate the skin, remove impurities, and leave the skin feeling soft and smooth. Additionally, some people believe that the clay’s properties may offer health benefits, such as relieving joint pain and improving circulation. The BBQ that we offer does call at this beach and you can book direct with us.

Local Cuisine: Visitors to Lixouri can sample authentic Greek cuisine at the town’s tavernas and restaurants, where fresh seafood, local produce, and traditional dishes are served. The town’s waterfront eateries offer a scenic setting for enjoying delicious meals with views of the sea.WE love to eat at a particular place just off the square called Cafe Ouzeri H Gefira,Lixouri https://maps.app.goo.gl/WgVdzXS1jJw6NStG9.

The food is delicious and it’s where the locals go.
